Tuscany - Coast and Islands |
The Versilia |
|
![]() |
From Marina di Massa to Viareggio, passing through Lido di Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Pietrasanta, all the coast offers, to its affectionate regular goers, the best ingredients for a holiday, which ideally combines: social, artistic and literary life. Whatever the season there's always a good reason to visit Versilia: beach-life in summer, mild climate in spring and parties at Christmas and during Carnival time. |
Coast of Maremma |
|
![]() |
It is a long strip of Tuscan shore from Cecina to the mountains of Uccellina. The morphology of this shore is characterized of long sandy stretch and of headlands, sand dunes, tombolos and wide pine-forests: it's, beyond any doubt, one of the most beautiful and characteristic shore of Italy. Between the headlands of Piombino and the gulf of Baratti, one can be amazed at the ruins of ancient Populonia, the only Etruscan town on the seaside, expanded through the working of iron ore coming from Isola d'Elba. |
The coast of Argento |
|
![]() |
Turistic name of the stretch of coast, about 60 km, between Talamone and Capalbio, circumscribed by the the mountains of Uccellina toward the north and the lake of Burano toward the south. It is a low and linear coast, except for the headlands of Argentario and Ansedonia, that have an high and fretted coast. Other things worth seeing are: the oasis of Orbetello and of Burano, the town of Orbetello, situated in the middle of the lagoon and Ansedonia with its ancient ruins. |
Elba island |
|
![]() |
It is the third Italian island for its dimension; situated at about 10 miles (19,5 km) from the coast, it is a land that gives many possibilities for the sea tourism and there are also many different routes. Tourists visit it especially for its wonderful lonely coasts, its silence and the dry, mild climate. The two principal towns are Portoferraio and Porto Azzurro. |
Capraia island |
|
![]() |
It is a land of volcanic origin, generated in two different periods and by two different volcanoes. It has been defined as one of the naturalistic pearl of the Tuscan islands: the urbanization is only around the harbour or around the penal settlement; as for the rest of the island, there is a landscape made of Mediterranean bush, steppes and dry stony places. |
Giglio island |
|
![]() |
It is a single mountain chain north-southwards. If you are not a resident you are not allowed to bring your car on the island. The old ways and mule-tracks can be still, to a great extent, travelled over and this join together tourists who like going on foot and those who love the sea, with the possibility to reach beautiful and charming beaches and small bays, without using intrusive motor-boats. |
Montecristo island |

It is a natural reserve established from 1971 by a ministerial decree. It is an area of 10 square km, with 16 km of cliff and indented coastline and is formed by granitic rocks that rise at an height of about 600 mts. From 1985 the island can be visited by groups of tourists, under the supervision of the corps of foresters. There is not a regular transport department, and those who reach the island by their own boats are sent away by the coastguard boat, that goes round the coastline at regular intervals. |
