The art of embroidery in San Casciano
In
Mercatale Val di Pesa a family workshop creates original and timeless
embroidery.
For 35 years now in Mercatale Val di Pesa (San Casciano) Grazia
Giachi, along with her daughter, has made precious embroideries with
Florentine stitches, lily motifs, shadow and flat stitches. The art
of embroidery, which the lady learnt as a young girl when she worked
in Florence's shops, has a long tradition. It was the time European
nobility and rich American heiresses went to Tuscany to have elegant
garments and precious linen made up.
Her craft workshop has been open on the main piazza of Mercatale Val
di Pesa for 15 years, and for some time there has been a sales point
open at piazza Matteotti 35, in Greve in Chianti, from March to the
end of November. She and her daughter work with passion and
perfection,
and with technique and taste for colour.
There are table cloths, sheets and towels in embroidered
linen in their workshop and for some time the two proprietors
have started to make children's clothes as well. In particular they
carry out works by commission which are planned and created specifically
for their clients. Some of these clients are in the habit of commissioning
tablecloths which have the same pattern as their dinner services.
