Lakes in Tuscany |
Massaciuccoli |
|
![]() |
It is a little village that you can reach from the lake or from the road and is interesting for the ruins of a Roman villa, for a small museum (II century B.C. - III century A.D.), and for the ruins of Roman thermal baths, in the middle of olive-groves. Then there is the parish church of S. Lorenzo, from which you can admire a wonderful view: Roman ruins, the small channels of the marsh, the lake of Massaciuccoli and the Tyrrhenian Sea.. This area is interesting for naturalists because it is part of the natural park of "Migliarino-S. Rossore-Massacciuccoli" and for a route, created by the association LIPU, that leads to the shore of the lake. |

It is the native town of Giacomo Puccini and tourists can visit his house. During the summer there is also an important opera season dedicated to him. If you want also to visit the lake, there are little boats that can guide you through it. Finally, for sportsmen, there are courses of boating. |
Lac de Vagli |

In the middle of Alpi Apuane there is a lock, a wide artificial basin called Lago di Vagli, that was created from the river Edron in 1947 and lies down in the bottom of the valley among woods and the rocks of the mount Sumbra. The construction of this basin sentenced to death the small village of Fabbriche di Careggine, an important place for the manufacture of iron. Now this small village is completely submerged and only when the basin is empted for the upkeep of the lock, people can visit the ghostly ruins of the ancient village. |
